Planet Fitness vs. Youfit: Differences, Advantages, and Disadvantages

If you’ve ever been to Planet Fitness or Youfit, you’ve probably noticed some similarities between the two.

The same individual created both chain gyms. Planet Fitness was the first, but after selling the trademark in 2002, the entrepreneur opted to start Youfit based on Planet Fitness’ success.

Despite the fact that Planet Fitness and Youfit have a similar business strategy, they have distinct approaches to promoting their brands and gaining new customers.

So, which gym is better, Planet Fitness or Youfit? Neither facility is suitable for expert gym-goers or competitive athletes, but I prefer Youfit over Planet Fitness. It features significantly more strength equipment, personal trainers who can provide one-on-one attention and a limited number of group sessions that Planet Fitness does not have.

It is sometimes simple to choose between two gyms. However, when choosing between two clubs as comparable as Planet Fitness and Youfit, it might be tough to determine which one is better for you.

In this post, I’ll go through both gyms in depth so you can decide which one would best help you attain your objectives.

Overview of Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness was created in 1993 by a former Gold’s Gym franchise owner who realized he didn’t want to be surrounded by bodybuilders. The business is now recognized for making fun of the exact sort of individual to whom its founder used to cater, albeit I believe it goes too far when it generalizes and caricatures particular categories of people in its advertising material.

Planet Fitness, in addition to its comical advertisements, tends to denigrate itself by pushing its members to consume less nutritional items such as pizza and bagels. I’m not opposed to eating any of those things in moderation, but when I go to the gym, I’d rather be with individuals who will inspire me to make better choices.

Planet Fitness, on the other hand, is an acceptable location to work out for folks who are working out for enjoyment and do not have significant strength or cosmetic objectives. It is reasonably priced, contains adequate cardio equipment, and a limited selection of strength equipment. Just don’t expect to make any meaningful progress in that area.

  • Membership plans that are inexpensive
  • Black Card members get access to many clubs.
  • offers discounts to Black Card members.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available.
  • Tanning beds and massage chairs are among the amenities available.

  • There are no heavy dumbbells, barbells, squat racks, or deadlift platforms allowed.
  • There will be no group courses.

Overview of Youfit

As I previously said, Youfit was started by the same entrepreneur who founded Planet Fitness. It has the same price structure, brand colors, and many of the same features as its predecessor.

However, unlike Planet Fitness, Youfit does not use crazy marketing strategies to demonstrate how welcome it is while mocking particular sorts of individuals. You will also not find pizza or bagels at Youfit.

Youfit isn’t the best gym for expert gym-goers or competitive athletes, but it has a more welcoming environment and doesn’t go out of its way to put others down. Many of its venues are also calm and do not get overcrowded, making it an excellent alternative for folks who dislike working out in front of huge crowds.

  • Memberships are reasonably priced.
  • The majority of venues are calm and not too busy.
  • Employees and trainers that are pleasant to work with
  • The culture that is welcoming and relaxed
  • There are no hidden costs.

  • There is a limited number of group courses available.
  • There aren’t many amenities.

Planet Fitness vs. Youfit: 10 Distinctions

The fact that Planet Fitness and Youfit have a similar business strategy does not imply that both clubs are suitable for everyone. A full analysis of how they rate against each other is provided below.

1. Cost

Gym membership fees are intended to accommodate a wide range of budgets. Even if you can’t afford an expensive membership, you should be able to locate a gym near you that has affordable monthly fees. Just keep in mind that gyms charge registration fees, yearly fees, and taxes, which may quickly mount up.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness has two membership plans: the Classic plan, which costs $10 per month plus taxes, and the Black Card membership, which costs $22.99 per month plus taxes.

An annual cost of $39 is required for any plan. Only the Classic membership requires an enrollment charge, which may be as little as $1.

Non-members may check out Planet Fitness for free before buying a subscription.

Youfit, like Planet Fitness, offers two membership options: a Basic plan for $10/month plus taxes and a Lime Card plan, also known as a Premium plan in select locations, for $24.99/month.

An enrollment fee of $29 is required for the Basic plan. The registration cost for the Lime Card membership is merely $1. The yearly charge for both plans is $53.49.

Youfit also provides free one-time trial permits.

The Result

The monthly dues at Planet Fitness and Youfit are almost identical, but Planet Fitness wins because its enrollment and yearly costs are cheaper.

2. Length of Contract

Month-to-month and yearly contracts are also typical at chain gyms, although the duration of your contract is often determined by the kind of membership you choose. If you have a choice for the duration of your commitment, seek a gym that provides contracts of varied lengths.

Planet Fitness

The Classic membership is available on a month-to-month basis. A yearly commitment is required for Black Card membership.

Although the majority of Youfit locations only offer month-to-month subscriptions, several clubs do offer yearly contracts to Lime Card members.

The Result

It’s a tie since both gyms offer month-to-month and year contracts.

3. Equipment

Because each gym caters to a distinct kind of clientele, the equipment supplied differs.

Some gyms feature rows and rows of cardio machines with very little strength training equipment, and others have an equal number of both. You’ll need to consider what kind of exercises you’ll perform most often so that the gym you join has the necessary equipment.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness offers a disproportionate number of cardio machines compared to strength machines. There are some weight equipment and dumbbells, as well as EZ curl bars and preset straight bars, but treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary cycles outnumber them.

Furthermore, the dumbbells only go up to 50 pounds, and no barbells, plates, squat racks, or deadlift platforms are available.

Youfit, like Planet Fitness, features more aerobic equipment than strength equipment, however, most locations include barbells and dumbbells greater than 50 pounds. Resistance machines, EZ curl bars, preloaded straight bars, free-standing benches, and bench press stations are also available.

There’s also a personal training section with Concept 2 rowers and some functional training equipment.

The Result

Neither gym offers a large selection of equipment, but Youfit has a superior selection of squat racks and barbells.

4. Atmosphere

The gym you join should have a warm, friendly environment and should be supportive of your objectives. Otherwise, you’ll be unhappy every time you go and begin to dislike your exercises.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness, despite its promises to be a judgment-free zone, is one of the most judgemental gyms around. It provides an excellent ambiance for novices, elders, and occasional or casual gym-goers, but that’s about it. Planet Fitness is not for you if you want to be surrounded by individuals who want to work hard and feel enthusiastic about making progress in the gym.

It’s also difficult to work out at Planet Fitness without fear of setting off the lunk alarm. Many establishments would never ring it, but at certain clubs, they will set it off if you make even a little error. You may have more stressful experiences than favorable ones in certain settings.

Youfit does not have a lunk alert and is less likely to reject those who do not fit its target demographic. However, it continues to pander to casual gym-goers, so if you’re more experienced, you can feel out of place.

Youfit offers a nice staff and members that are respectful to one another. Depending on the location, it also does not become too crowded, which contributes to a more relaxing atmosphere.

The Result

If you’re a competitive athlete or are farther along in your fitness quest, you could find it difficult to fit in at Planet Fitness and Youfit. However, Youfit is more welcoming of persons with varying degrees of expertise.

5. Gym Regulations

While gyms have restrictions in place to safeguard their equipment and keep their members safe, some clubs’ standards are so rigid that working out properly is almost impossible. When picking between two gyms, evaluate the regulations of each one to ensure they won’t prevent you from accomplishing your objectives.

It’s also important to learn the cancellation procedures of each gym in case you decide to cancel your membership in the future.

Planet Fitness

You are not permitted to grunt, use chalk, or drop weights at Planet Fitness. You can’t even make much noise – I’ve heard of individuals getting in trouble for being too loud while placing dumbbells back on the rack or changing the weights on a machine.

Planet Fitness does not permit any exposing apparel, including crop tops or too-short shorts. You must also wear shoes at all times.

You may bring an unlimited number of visitors each month if you have a Black Card membership. You cannot, however, transfer your membership to another individual.

To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, go to the front desk and fill out a form. Members on the Classic plan may cancel at any time without penalty. Members who want to deactivate their Black Card must pay a $58 cancellation charge.

Grunting, dropping weights, and using chalk are all prohibited at Youfit, just as they are at Planet Fitness. The dress code is more flexible, so you may wear any gym-appropriate apparel you like.

If you have a Lime Card, you may bring one visitor to the gym with you at any time.

If you wish to cancel your membership, you must fill out a cancellation form at the front desk. Youfit demands 10 days’ notice, and you will be responsible for paying any outstanding dues during that time. Youfit also charges cancellation fees ranging from $10 to $60.

You may prevent termination by transferring your membership to another person. You must pay a minor transfer fee, and the other party must pay their first and final months’ dues at the time of transfer.

The Result

Planet Fitness and Youfit have identical rules on the use of chalk, grunting, and dropping weights. However, Youfit wins since its cancellation terms are often less expensive, and you may transfer your membership to another individual to bypass the cancellation procedure.

6. Group Instruction

Group sessions may provide a lot of discipline and responsibility, and the social component appeals to folks who don’t enjoy working out alone. However, not all gyms offer group courses, and even those that do may not be available at times that suit your schedule.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness does not provide group courses, but it does offer small group training sessions known as PE@PF. There are around ten sessions every day.

Each class has a distinct function. If you’re new to the gym, you may attend an orientation class to learn how to operate all of the equipment. You may undertake an accelerated circuit session if you don’t have time for a full exercise. You may choose a class that concentrates on various muscle groups if you want to target a specific region of your body.

The majority of Youfit sites only offer a few group lessons each day. sessions vary by location, but you can generally find Zumba, cardio dance, step aerobics, kickboxing, spin, and barre sessions.

Members of the Lime Card may attend an unlimited number of courses each month.

The Result

If you prefer to attend more typical group courses like Zumba or kickboxing, Youfit has a greater variety.

7. Amenities

Many gyms now provide amenities such as tanning beds and smoothie bars in addition to training equipment. However, facilities vary by location at most gyms, and you may have to pay extra to utilize some of them.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness does not offer many features. There is no daycare available, and there are no saunas, basketball courts, or swimming pools. Massage chairs, red light treatment, tanning facilities, and smoothie bars are available. It also includes locker facilities and showers available to all of its members.

There are just a few Youfit facilities that feature tanning beds, massage chairs, and smoothie bars. Showers and locker rooms are offered at all sites, but no basketball courts, saunas, pools, or red light treatment are available.

You can acquire daycare for one kid for an additional $10 each month. Childcare for any additional children costs an additional $7 per month per kid.

The Result

Most Planet Fitness facilities are accessible at all locations, however certain Youfit amenities are only offered at select locations. Planet Fitness is the place to go if you want to use massage chairs, tanning beds, red light treatment, or enjoy a post-workout smoothie.

8. Personal Development

Youfit Personal Training vs. Planet Fitness

If you join a gym to work with a personal trainer, you must examine both the cost and the value you will get from him or her. Personal trainers may be expensive, but not all of them are competent to offer you the results you seek. Some of them will not even pay you attention.

Planet Fitness

Personal trainers at Planet Fitness have nationally recognized credentials from NASM, ISSA, ACE, or other comparable organizations. They will, however, not provide you much one-on-one attention. They administer the PE@PF sessions and are accessible for consultations if you are unsure where to begin, but they will not be there to accompany you through your exercise.

On the bright side, all members get free consultations and PE@PF lessons.

Youfit’s personal trainers also have nationally recognized qualifications. It is usual for them to also have degrees in exercise science or kinesiology.

Youfit exclusively provides personal training sessions lasting 30 minutes. They range in price from $30 to $40. If you wish to buy sessions in bulk, you may purchase monthly bundles of two, four, or eight sessions.

Youfit, unlike other gyms, does not provide free personal training sessions to new members.

The Result

If you want personal training, Youfit is a better option since its experts will provide you with more specialized attention.

9. Locations

It’s useful to know how many gyms there are and where they are located so you can calculate how simple it will be for you to get there.

It’s also a good idea to inquire about the gym’s reciprocity if you want to be able to work out at other clubs while on vacation or if you want to divide your time between a location near where you live and another near where you work.

Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness has almost 2,000 facilities worldwide. They are mostly located in the United States, although there are also places in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Canada.

You may visit any place in any nation if you have a Black Card membership.

Youfit has around 100 sites in total. The majority of places are in the southern United States, although there are a handful in the northeast and southeast. Members who have a Lime Card may visit any site.

The Result

Youfit does not have nearly as many locations as Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness is the place to go if you want to join a gym with thousands of handy locations.

10. Operation Hours

Many gyms are open at hours that are convenient for people’s hectic schedules, although some gyms open later or shut sooner than others. If you’re a night owl, a shift worker, or a busy parent, you’ll need to find a gym that is open late or 24 hours a day.

Planet Fitness

Most Planet Fitness facilities are open 24 hours a day. If your local club isn’t open 24 hours a day, you should be allowed to visit between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Youfit’s hours vary depending on location, but most clubs are open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

The Result

Planet Fitness is great for those who need to exercise late at night or early in the morning.
